New Study: Bairin Area, Inner Mongolia
Article by M. Bellaire
We have added a new study of medicinal wild plants used by Mongol herdsmen in Bairin Area of Inner Mongolia from 2019. Knowledge of Mongolian botanical knowledge has been in decline, making collection and analysis particularly important.
Data was collected from 2008-2014 from 18 villages and 136 local Mongol herdsmen in Bairin Right Barrier and Bairin Left Barrier. Researchers found 40 plant species used in folk medicine. Though not many wild plant species are used by Mongol herdsmen in Bairin, 14 species had not been recorded in Traditional Mongolian Medicine (TMM) and 2 species had not been recorded in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Species not used in TMM or TCM include Allium condensatum and Xanthium mongolicum.
This is our first featured study from Central Asia, and helps us meet our goal of profiling plants from geographically distinct regions.
As always, any reported medicinal uses require scientific investigation. For more information about preparations and the parts of the plants used, please see the original publication.
This research was published in Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine in July of 2019.
