Researchers investigated the potential benefits of essential oils extracted from discarded citrus peels in preventing diseases caused by pathogens and oxidative stress. This utilization of agricultural waste promotes a sustainable agricultural economy and environmental protection.
The essential oil from Tenore leaves in Brazil contains substances like methyl N-methyl-anthranilate which has antifungal properties against yeast and inhibits biofilm production. It may be useful for treating yeast infections like candidiasis and cryptococcosis.
Researchers analyzed the medicinal plant, Lour. Ten, for compounds that might inhibit COVID-19 virus main protease. They found 21 compounds, four of which showed potential for inhibiting this enzyme. The most promising compound was quercetin-7-glucoside-3-rutinoside with the strongest binding affinity to the enzyme. These findings provide a potential new avenue for developing antiviral agents against COVID-19.
