Ameliorative effects of Portulaca oleracea L. (purslane) and its active constituents on nervous system disorders: A review.

The use of herbal medicines is increasing in popularity for their potential to develop effective medications with minimal harmful effects. Purslane has various applications in treating disorders such as arthritis, burns, coughs, and liver disorders, as well as shortness of breath. Research shows that purslane has qualities including neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. This study updated existing literature on purslane and found it has potential therapeutic effects for various nervous system disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, and anxiety. More research is needed to further support its beneficial effects on these disorders.

Chemical Composition of Essential Oils of Seven Polygonum Species from Turkey: A Chemotaxonomic Approach.

Aromatic plant genus Polygonum, used in various cuisines, was analyzed for chemical composition in the essential oils of seven species. The study found qualitative and quantitative differences among the species and identified major compounds, including (E)-β-farnesene, dodecanal, and β-caryophyllene. This is the most comprehensive study to determine essential oil components of Polygonum species, with new findings revealed. Medicinal plant use is prevalent and understanding the chemical makeup of these plants can inform treatment of various diseases.
