Phytochemistry Studies

Phytochemical profiling and anthelmintic potential of extracts of selected tropical plants on parasites of fishes in Epe Lagoon.

This research examined the anthelmintic properties of tropical plant extracts compared to praziquantel. Alligator pepper and neem extracts were most potent, and Aframomum melegueta and praziquantel were effective against all parasite classes with a wide safety margin for the fish host.

Dietary Mentha piperita essential oil loaded in chitosan nanoparticles mediated the growth performance and humoral immune responses in Siberian sturgeon (Acipenserbaerii).

Researchers used chitosan nanoparticles loaded with Mentha piperita essential oil as a dietary supplement for Siberian sturgeon fry in intensive aquaculture. Results showed improved growth and immune responses, suggesting that this supplementation could enhance sustainable sturgeon production.

Polyphenol rich sugarcane extract (PRSE) has potential antiviral activity against influenza A virus in vitro.

Researchers found that treatment of influenza A virus (IAV)-infected cells with polyphenol rich sugarcane extract (PRSE) inhibited virus infection without causing harm. PRSE limited viral replication, protein expression, and mRNA transcription, and was effective against multiple IAV strains. PRSE could be a potential alternative treatment for IAV.
